Really?

This month the cover of Crisis Magazine is "If Abortion Were Outlawed Tomorrow... Would We Be Ready". The story (not available online), "The Law of Unintended Consequences - A Cautionary Look at Overturning Roe v. Wade", is by Elizabeth Thecla Mauro.

Surprisingly, the author claims if Roe v. Wade were overturned, there would be a schism in the Catholic Church!!!! I find this scenario extremely hard to believe.

A Communist nation may not be able to transition to free-market and free democratic processes in an instant without a transitional phase - but I don't think outlawing abortion in this country would have such major economic represcussions - or spritual reprecussions in the Catholic Church as the author fears. I was so flabberghasted to read the article and the reasoning (or lack thereof) I can barely comment intelligently.

I read that article. I did not get that conclusion from it. It seemed to me she was exploring possible ramifications that could come from overturning Roe v Wade without first following through on President Bush's idea that hearts and minds must be changed.

Dear Anonymous: I may have to read the article again. Certainly G.W.Bush has a point abut hears and minds - actually the point is that the country may not be ready to overturn Roe v. Wade because not enough hearts and minds (education) have been changed. I don't think he meant (or if he did, he is wrong)that the country would have a crisis or is somehow unprepared to take this step because of the consequences. Yet the author takes up on this - that somehow the country and Catholics in particular would have some sort of crisis if Roe v. Wade disappeared tomorrow. This is what I go out of it and as I said was so incredulous I could hardly comment other than to report. I will read it again and post anew if I change my impression.

Anyway - thanks for the comment.
